Insomnia and/or sleep disturbances (insomnia)

Almost everyone has experienced nights in which you do not sleep as well as usual. You have trouble falling asleep, wake up several times during the night or wake up earlier in the morning than usual.

However, this does not mean that there is a disease in the sense of insomnia. Even a very short sleep duration of, say, four or five hours and occasional waking up during the night are not fundamentally problematic – if the overall sleep is experienced as restful.

When does sleep disturbances or insomnia start?

If sleep problems persist for several weeks and occur at least three times a week, experts speak of insomnia.

Chronic insomnia is one of the most common diseases. Affected complain of reduced quality and quantity of sleep. Problems with falling asleep and/or staying asleep, waking up early in the morning or restless sleep are the main problems. These sleep problems can also lead to limitations in everyday life, such as performance breakdowns, tiredness, low mood or cognitive problems (such as increasing forgetfulness, concentration problems).

Because chronic insomnia can have health and social consequences in addition to the high suffering pressure, good diagnostics and therapy are of great importance.
